Rugby sevens at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will take place from 27 July to 1 August at the Tokyo Stadium. Twenty-four teams (twelve each for men and women) will compete in the tournament. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games organising committee has announced session times for the men’s and women’s rugby sevens competitions.
As previously announced, the sevens will take place at the iconic Tokyo Stadium, a Rugby World Cup 2019 host venue, from July 27 – August 1.
In a reverse to the Rio 2016 schedule, the men’s competition will be played first over three days from July 27-29 with the women’s competition taking place from July 31 – August 1 and culminating with the gold medal session on ‘Super Saturday’.
Meet the Qualified teams – Men
Of the 12 teams that will compete in Japan, four sides qualified through their placing of the last World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series. Fiji, South Africa, New Zealand, and the USA men will all feel comfortable with their accomplishments.
Meet the Qualified teams – Women
Like the men, the top four teams from the women’s World Series all secured a place in Japan. New Zealand, the United States, Canada, and Australia can now focus on their 2019/20 Sevens Series, before focusing on the Olympics.
This Olympic tournament, with two Asian nations competing in 2020, it will hopefully amplify that trend. Growth in the game, and in women’s sport across developing nations is a benefit to World Rugby and the profile of rugby sevens.
